Virginia Ellen (Bruce) Funk

Virginia Ellen Bruce Funk was born on February 25, 1923, to Mary and Harold Bruce.  

She was an only child but had many aunts, uncles, and cousins through her mother’s family.  Though they mostly lived around The Dalles, and Dufer, Oregon there were many visits back and forth.  Virginia grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon attending Oak Grove Elementary School and Milwaukie High School.  She loved to ski and spent many hours on the slopes of Mt. Hood skiing with friends.  She married Adolf Funk in 1941 and later added Monty, Marietta and Morris to the family.  Virginia loved her family, her home and spending time in the yard tending to flowers.  She was an excellent pianist and at an early age her children often heard her playing in her spare time.  Unfortunately, her attempts to instill her musical abilities into her children met with lukewarm results in at least one of her children, the boys played horns in their high school bands. Her husband, Adolf loved to fish, and fishing and camping became the annual vacation destination.  In later years a bigger, speedier boat was added to the mix so fishing and water skiing was more enticing to three teenagers.  After all were exhausted from water skiing, the fishing commenced.  Virginia loved to sew and knit and was skilled at making Pendleton shirts for Monty and Morris and skirts for Marietta not being satisfied with the results until all plaids were matched.  

In retirement years, Virginia and Adolf took several cruises to Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Fiji, Hawaii, the Caribbean and down the Amazon River most often with the same group of friends.  She viewed life with a practical eye, doing what had to be done without complaint.  She guided her family by example, her friends were lifelong, and her giving was generous.  To those who were close to her she will always be remembered with love and fond memories.  She died at the age of 99 and three fourths on November 18th, 2022.  She is survived by, daughter Marietta, son-in-law Pierce, son Morris and daughter-in-law, Jacquie, grandchildren Neal (Tori), Sharon, and Matthew (Elizabeth), Jeff Funk, Ken Funk and great grandchildren Savannah, Emma, Tyler, and Alyssa.
