Esker Jimmie Mayberry died peacefully at home Saturday, June 16, 2018 embraced by his wife. He was 90 years old. Born May 3, 1928 in Bisbee, Arizona to Esker Farrell and Amy Busby Mayberry, Jim grew up in and loved Arizona, especially his home community of St. David. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Carmen Consuelo Alonzo, aka Connie. Jim was married 53 years to Gwendolyn Young Mayberry. Gwen died in 1999. Jim and Gwen have nine children, all living. Linda Richey (Robin), Ralph Esker (Marti), Susan LeSueur (Michael), J. Young (Susan), Janice Robinson (Robby), Wendy Skinner (Randy), John Carter (Faye), Michelle Cooley (Freeman) and Andrew Wayne (Sheila). Jim was loved and respected by Connie’s four children, Alberto Barreto (Claudia), Lourdes Buenrostro (Ovaldo), Orlando (Ariana) and David Barreto. Jim is also survived by numerous grandchildren and a brother, Andy (Lavee). Brother, Roland (Karen), preceded him in death.
Jim was a licensed barber since 1948. He also worked at times as a meat packer. He enjoyed being a gentleman farmer with acreage of pecan trees, pasture and a variety of animals. He was a lifelong faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a very charitable man, and found great joy serving in various assignments and in associations with others. He had served on the St. David School Board and the St. David Irrigation Board.
Funeral services will be held at the St. David Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Saturday June 30. Viewing starts at 9 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service at 10 a.m. All are invited to attend. His remains will be interred in the St. David cemetery.
