Max Robert Valkingburg, affectionately known as Coach V, passed away on August 29, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 97. Born on August 28, 1927, in Willard Ohio, he dedicated nearly five decades to nurturing minds and shaping the futures of countless students in Arizona.
Max served in the USMC from 1944 to 1947. He was with the 6th Marines during the invasion of Okinawa and during the occupation of Tsingtao, China. Upon his return home from WWII, Max pursued his passion for education. He earned a BA in Education from Western New Mexico University in 1952 and later a master's degree in counseling from the University of Arizona. His teaching career spanned from 1952 to 1989, touching lives at Isaac Elementary School, Clifton High School and Benson High School.
Beyond his professional life, Max was a devoted husband of 77 years to Thelma J. Valkingburg, and a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his spouse, Thelma; daughter Vicki J. Martzke; son-in-law James F. Martzke; grandchildren Max R Valkingburg, granddaughter-in-law Deanna Valkingburg, Stefanie J Smith, as well as his great-granddaughter Sabine A Valkingburg. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Max Roland and Antoinette Elizabeth Tomkins-Valkingburg; brothers Paul and Lysle Valkingburg; and son Max Robert Valkingburg.
An avid golfer, backpacker, and runner, Max found joy and peace in these pursuits. His life was a testament to the impact one individual can have through dedication and kindness.
Memorial services are being arranged by the family, with further details to follow. Richardson Benson Mortuary in Benson, Arizona is assisting with the arrangements. Max's legacy will live on through many lives he touched and the community he helped build.
