Larry V Merrill, of St. David Arizona, passed away on Wednesday October 13, 2021. He was 84 years old. He was born on February 9, 1937 in Pima, AZ to Jessie Glen (Rusty) & Velma Francise Merrill.
Larry moved to St. David shortly after his birth and spent his entire life there. Larry was active in football, basketball, & fast pitch softball as a youth and through high school. He graduated from St. David High School in 1955. After graduation, Larry spent two year in the United States Navy where he was stationed in Hawaii, Japan, and many other places in the Pacific. After the Navy he served a 2 year mission to the Northern California Mission. Once home he met Janice Karene Carnes and they married on June 16, 1960 In the Mesa Arizona Temple for Time and All Eternity.
Larry work for the Arizona Department of Transportation retiring in 1997. He loved farming and raising cattle. But most of all he loved his family. His favorite memories are of camping, hunting/fishing, and any time spent with his kids and grandkids. As a young boy he loved hunting and trapping with his father and brothers and passed along this same love to his children and grandchildren.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in many positions including Bishop of the St. David Ward. He and his wife served a mission for 9 years as caretakers of the Faithful Pines Girls camp in Alpine Arizona. He served as a temple worker in the Mesa Temple and the Gila Valley Temple. He was known to be kind and loving and never hesitated to offer service to anyone who needed help.
Larry was proceeded in death by his parent Rusty & Velma Merrill and his brothers Burt, Eugene, Loren, and Orland. He is survived by his wife Janice and 9 children. Joy & Darren Stirland of Riverton UT, Reese of Ft. Thomas, Lori & Stephen McGaughey of Chandler AZ, Tracy of Pomerene, Kevin & Tressa of St David, Troy & Amy of Snowflake AZ, Delvern & Lori of St. David, Karene & Henrik Lauritzsen of Jar, Norway, and Danielle & Brett Sipe of Vail, AZ. His 28 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Brother Gary & Sharleen and Sisters Kay & Frank Wood, and Judy.
A viewing will be held on Saturday October 23rd at 9:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. David. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m., followed by interment in the St. David Cemetery.
