Grant Shumway Owens

April 21, 1928 ~ March 23, 2022 (age 93)

Grant Shumway Owens returned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022.  He was born on April 21st, 1928 in Yuma, Arizona to Steven Lester Owens and Isadore Shumway. He graduated high school in Safford Arizona and received his Bachelor’s degree in Entomology from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Grant served in the United States Army and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Northwestern States, which covered Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Wyoming.  Grant retired from Fort Huachuca, as an Animal Control Specialist, yet spoke most often about his time serving alongside his wife at the local food bank.

After a sweet courtship, and fighting off other suitors, he married Elaine Barney on July 3rd, 1953 at the Mesa Arizona Temple.  The family enjoyed their time at cabins, and campgrounds alike, on Mount Graham.  Grant often shared one of his first memories with his dad at age 3 on horseback on that mountain.  He enjoyed times with his siblings growing up, ate many bologna sandwiches, cherished his root beer floats, and Elaine often made his favorite, lemon meringue pie, even though it was not her favorite.  He dedicated his life to his family and community, by lifting up others in need.  He and Elaine shared 65 years of marriage, and spoke fondly of his bride daily.

Grant lived a full life, passing at age 93, preceded in death by his sweetheart Elaine and two sons, Terry and Alan.  He was survived by his children Rebecca, Jeffrey, JoAnn, Sheri, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Later in life one could find Grant solving a myriad of puzzles, sharing a joke, or story, but he enjoyed talking to others the most and always had a piece of candy or treat to share. Those that had the pleasure of being near him felt his genuine care, concern, love, kindness and gentleness.

A graveside ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 26th, 2022. Pomerene Cemetery, Benson, AZ 85602.
