Shirley Mae (Edmonson) Barney

Shirley Mae Edmonson Barney, our Mother, passed away peacefully into the arms of our Daddy on February 17, 2018. She was 89 years old. Shirley was born April 12, 1928 in Globe, Arizona, the second child of Loyde Cecil and Velma Carson Edmonson. She graduated from Globe High School and then attended Gila Academy (EAC) in Thatcher, AZ until 1947 when she met and married her sweetheart, Eldon Barney. They moved to Pomerene January 1, 1948 where they farmed, had a dairy and raised their family. They also had a beautiful ranch and cabin in Alpine, AZ which was their pride and joy.

Although Shirley never worked outside the home, she certainly worked hard in the home being the mother of 8 children. She was an avid bird watcher, and loved all God’s creatures and creations. If there was ever anything she was interested in she would learn about it 100%. This included her wonderful artwork, extensive insect collection, and family heirloom collection. She also grew beautiful flowers and even did a little taxidermy. Her greatest passion, however, was family history, as she searched long and hard for her ancestors. She was a very faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities throughout the years, especially with the Girls’ Camp program. She loved serving others and will forever be known as the one who tried to preserve all the flowers in the forest.

Those who truly love and will miss her are her children Janie (Michael) Charchenko, Sandy (Layne) Peterson, Becky (Hal) Rowley, Patty (Max) Burrell, Polly (Dalen) Edington, Jay (Barbara) Barney, Suzanne (Alan) Judd, and Flint (Rhonda) Barney, plus 59 grandchildren, 175 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and many, many extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center on Pomerene Rd., Pomerene, AZ. Viewing will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at Richardson’s Mortuary and 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning before the service. Burial will follow at the Pomerene Cemetery.  

Arrangements will be handled by Richardson’s Mortuary in Benson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humanitarian Aid Fund through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
